Periodic Checklist for Concerned Car Owners
Engine - Follow
the manufacturer's recommendations on oil and filter changes. However, a good rule of
thumb is every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. Engine oil, transmission fluid and fuel are three
systems that have filters that need to be replaced on a periodic basis. If your car is not
running properly, you should take it in to be checked out. The same goes for engine
tune-ups.
Tire Inflation -
Underinflated tires can lead to increased fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. Also,
studies indicate that underinflated tires can create safety hazards which result in
accidents. Check tire inflation once a month.
Tire Rotation - Have
your tires rotated and balanced at least every 10,000 miles.
Windshield Wipers -
These should be changed once a year.
Car Battery - Your car
battery should be checked monthly in the winter, weekly in hot weather and daily on long
trips.
Batteries - You should
check the battery fluid level monthly in the winter, weekly in hot weather and daily on
long trips. Also, be sure to regularly check a battery if the battery is more than
two years old.
Drive Belt -
Periodically check the tension on drive belts. They should not give more than a half an
inch.
Moving Parts - All
moving parts such as door hinges, door latches and hood hinges should be lubricated
periodically.
Air Conditioner - Run
your air conditioner monthly to keep the compressor seal lubricated and in proper running
order.
